Anthony Hsieh
Founder & CEO
Anthony Hsieh is the Founder and CEO of loanDepot. He started the company in 2010 as a de novo startup and grew the business by an average of 38% year over year for the first decade to become the second largest retail lender in the nation, surpassing iconic mortgage players such as Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Chase. The company differentiated itself with a laser focus on innovation, creating proprietary technology to deliver an exceptional customer experience. Along the way Hsieh was recognized with various industry awards, including LendIt Fintech’s “Executive of the Year.”
In April of 2022, Hsieh retired as CEO to pursue his lifelong dream of traveling the world for his passion of sportfishing. Since then, he has collaborated with the scientific community, notably the pioneering marine biologist Dr. Barbara Block of Stanford University, to conduct billfish and marine research. Hsieh’s Bad Company Fishing Adventures is the largest private fishing program in the world, deploying satellite tagging systems that help scientists study the migratory patterns of these large species and gain insight into their role in maintaining healthy ocean ecosystems. His work has taken him to oceans across both the northern and southern hemispheres, including both the West and East coasts of Africa, as well as Cape Verde; Porto Seguro, Brazil; Northern Queensland, Australia; the Azores; and Madeira, Portugal.
In the spring of 2025, Hsieh returned to loanDepot in a day-to-day operating role as Executive Chairman of Mortgage Originations and in July of 2025 was named the company’s permanent CEO.
Hsieh has a long history of entrepreneurial success. Before founding loanDepot, Hsieh built and sold two successful mortgage businesses—loansdirect.com and HomeLoanCenter.com—which were acquired by E*TRADE and IAC/InterActiveCorp, respectively. Born in Taiwan, Hsieh immigrated to the United States with his parents as a young child. As the family’s designated representative, he often negotiated major purchases and managed financial decisions well beyond his years. These early responsibilities sparked a lifelong commitment to helping more families achieve the American dream of homeownership.
Hsieh’s deep respect for the military community is closely tied to his strong love for the United States. In 2018 he created War Heroes On Water (WHOW), an annual sportfishing tournament dedicated to helping combat-wounded Veterans heal from the physical and emotional wounds of war. With the help of Southern California’s sportfishing community, Hsieh and his fellow anglers gather Veterans from across the country to deliver a life-changing experience. Through WHOW, he has raised more than $7M to benefit Veterans and their families, making a significant and lasting impact on the lives of those he has touched.
