loanDepot debuts a new quarterly feature called Hidden Treasures to introduce readers to communities across the country that have unbeatable charm and yet have stayed relatively under the radar. For those looking for affordable places to live, one of these locales could be a great place to consider for a place to call home.

Beginning this month, Hidden Treasures will highlight a handful of communities around the country. The criteria for consideration include: desirable neighborhoods that boast affordable home prices, small town sizes, and incredible public schools as well as proximity to restaurants and entertainment.

"loanDepot decided to begin the Hidden Treasures series as a way to provide consumers with interesting information about the housing market that they may not have known otherwise," said Dan Hanson, loanDepot's Chief Retail Production Officer. "With so much negative news focusing on lack of affordable housing and lack of inventory, we wanted to provide a more upbeat perspective. There is good housing news out there."

In this debut edition, these lesser-known towns offer charm and big-city access being adjacent to larger metropolitan areas like Fort Worth, Tx, Raleigh, N.C. and Silicon Valley.

  • Cary, N.C. – In commuting distance to the famed Research Triangle of Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill, Cary is a small town with urban feel and great schools. (median home price of $334,400)
  • Watauga, Tx. – Near Dallas-Ft. Worth, Watauga boasts great restaurants and breweries, sunny weather with a summer average of 82 degrees, and high graduation rates. (median home price of $137,000)
  • Milwaukie, Ore. – Situated on Portland's southern edge, Milwaukie touts a charming and active waterfront, exceptional farmers' markets, attractive pedestrian-centered downtown and a vibrant arts culture. (median home price $309,000)
  • Petaluma and Suisun City, Calif. – These San Francisco Bay area towns are known for charm and active outdoor lifestyles. With housing prices sky high in San Francisco and Silicon Valley, these towns allow for a pleasant and relatively relaxed quality of life. (median home price $349,800)
